About RandTube

Built to help you escape the algorithm and rediscover the internet.

"YouTube's algorithm is brilliant at keeping you watching — but terrible at showing you something genuinely new. RandTube exists to fix that. Every spin is a door to something you'd never have found on your own."

Our story

RandTube was born out of a simple frustration: spending 20 minutes scrolling YouTube recommendations only to end up watching the same type of content as always. The algorithm learns what you like and serves you more of it — which sounds great, but in practice creates a filter bubble that slowly narrows your world.

We wanted a way to break out of that. Something simple — just a button that throws you somewhere unexpected on YouTube. No curation, no personalisation, no agenda. Just the pure joy of discovery that the early internet used to offer.

So we built RandTube. It uses the official YouTube Data API to search for videos across eight broad categories, picks one at random, and shows it to you. That's it. Simple, fast, and genuinely surprising every single time.

What we believe

The internet is most exciting when it's unpredictable. The best things you've ever discovered online — the YouTube channel you've watched for years, the documentary that changed how you see the world, the musician you now love — probably came from a recommendation from a friend, a random link, or a happy accident. Not an algorithm.

RandTube tries to recreate that feeling of happy accident at scale. Every spin is a micro-adventure. You might land on something brilliant, something bizarre, or something you immediately skip — but the experience of not knowing is half the fun.

How it's built

RandTube is a lightweight web application built with plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. It uses the YouTube Data API v3 to fetch real, publicly available videos from YouTube. All API calls are handled server-side via Netlify Functions so your data stays private and our API credentials stay secure.

The site has no user accounts, no tracking beyond standard analytics, and no data retention. Your spin history is stored locally in your browser and never sent to our servers.
